Andrei Laskatelev:

Big Apple has a Fancy Taste!

Recently, the main slogan of the Big Apple city is pronounced as “Bon Appetite”! New York took its turn to host the 55 International Summer Fancy Food Show with a great hunger of the tough times when food industry feels better than auto making.

The event organized by the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade, Inc. was born to be crowded. The day after August 30, 1955 when it was held in New York for the first time, the New York Times reported: “The place is the Sheraton-Astor Hotel, where the first Annual National Fancy Food and Confection Show opened on Sunday. Up to 5 P. M. last night more than 12,000 buyers, representing wholesalers and distributors, and specialty companies, as well as all types of retailers, had visited the show. One hundred and twenty-five foreign and American exhibitors are showing their products. Buying has been brisk, with many orders for delivery in October at the latest.”

There should be people who still remember the tastes of the first Fancy Food Show, so if there are any among our site visitors – your comments are welcomed and much appreciated.
As for the recent event, it is more than successful this year - the fair is expected to draw some 24,000 attendees! Around 2,500 companies from United States and more than 70 foreign countries are promoting about 140,000 products, including manufacturing really fancy not say freakish dishes from chocolate, frozen, fruit or figured bakery products. Companies attending the fair are mainly working in fields like ready-to-serve-meals, dairy products, seafood, bakery products, sweets, chocolate, ice-cream, fruits, beverages, coffee, tea, wine, beer, preservatives, spices, and household utensils.

Food lovers who have spent $35 per ticket to visit Jacob K. Javits Center where the largest event of the International Food Trading was opened on June 28, already have mentioned that this year Show is less generous with the food samples portions for the visitors, but industry specialists high ranked the quality and creativity of the traders.

Another tendency shows the great success of the foreign companies bringing the ideas of ethnic culinary into the United States kitchens.

Among them are food producers from Turkey which have won huge visitors interest. Thirty-three Turkish companies are representing their products at "Summer 2009 Fancy Food & Confection Show" in New York. Turkey's Olive and Olive Oil Promotion Group and Hazelnut Promotion Group also are taking part in the three-day fair at the Jacob K. Javits Center.
